What Is AMD?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the part of your retina responsible for sharp, central vision. As the macula deteriorates, it becomes harder to see objects directly in front of you—making everyday tasks like reading, driving, or recognizing faces more difficult.

AMD often develops silently, with no symptoms until vision begins to fade. That’s why routine eye exams, especially after age 50, are so important, Risk Factors for AMD While age is the biggest risk factor, others include:
  • Family history of AMD
  • Being Caucasian
  • Female gender
  • Prolonged sun exposure
  • Smoking (past or present)

How to Lower Your Risk

You can take steps to protect your vision:
  • Get regular eye exams
  • Take recommended eye vitamins
  • Quit smoking Exercise and maintain a healthy weight
  • Control blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Wear sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection
  • Use blue light filters on screens

Treatment Options

There are two types of AMD:
  • Dry AMD: More common and slower to progress
  • Wet AMD: Less common but more severe and fast-moving

Treatment for wet AMD may include medications or laser therapy. For dry AMD, the focus is on monitoring and lifestyle changes to slow progression. How AMD Is Detected Traditional dilated eye exams allow your doctor to examine the retina for signs of AMD. Today, we also offer advanced diagnostic tools at VIVID Eyecare.
