What’s in a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

Your optometrist will tailor the exam based on your medical history, but most comprehensive exams include:

• Visual Acuity: Measures how clearly you see, usually with an eye chart
• Visual Fields: Detects blind spots in your vision
• Refraction: Determine your exact eyeglass prescription
• Slit Lamp: Checks for eye diseases and conditions
• Retinal Imaging: Screens for diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma
• Tonometry: Tests for glaucoma
• Ophthalmoscopy: Examines the optic nerve, retina, and blood vessels

How Often Should You Get an Eye Exam?

• Children:
  • At 6 months old
  • At age 3
  • Before starting school
  • Every 2 years until age 18
    • Every year for contact lenses
• Adults (18–60):
  • Every 2 years at minimum
    • Every year for contact lenses
• Seniors (61+):
  • Annually
